Sunshine coast orchards and crops hammered by vicious hailstorms.

The most prominent of these is the Tumangan river which stretches from the eastern side of the island up to a height of a mile and a half above the ocean. The rain on its banks was so unrelenting that even in the winter of 2001 and 2002, when rainfall was relatively flat, Tumangan was still below 6mm for the first ten days.

On this year's rainy, overcast occasion, the river levels came down to 6.9mm in just 15 minutes of rain and is now below 5mm. Despite the rain conditions and an unusual amount of rain, most crops have been ploughed in recent days, with the majority being wheat, sugar cane, palm oil, cocoa, beans, and rice.

Hua Hai village was in the middle of a field when the weather turned, and as soon as they received word of the impending disaster, they rushed to the Tumangan river with their livestock.

"I didn't have any hope of getting there and my livestock were killed because of this terrible weather," Hui Chen, a 20-year-old farmer who was at the Tumangan river, told The South China Morning Post.

"In our village, rain is bad, and it makes us miserable to suffer the same drought. If it wasn't for the rainfall, our crops would have died," added another woman who has two children, both under six, who were also affected by the storm.

While the rains and the drought have brought some good fortune, several areas on the island are suffering from severe damage.

The island has long been home to many fishermen, but with the amount of fishermen in the island's area now, their number has doubled and is also growing rapidly. Some of these fishermen, including most recently one of Hai Hai's five fishermen, fled the village when a typhoon struck on Friday.

The village has also suffered from the recent typhoon, as it had been evacuated from its homes by police the day before, fearing the storm would bring disaster on the main road to Tumangan, its main fishing village.

Hua Hai village is the biggest fishing village in the country, and the fishing there has been hit by massive losses. Local officials estimate that at least 400 members of local fishermen lost their jobs when the typhoon hit, while others lost their livelihoods.

There is no official response from the authorities, but one local fisherman told the paper that his wife was taken hostage by the local authorities and threatened with having the house in Tumangan flooded.

Locals were also concerned after the typhoon caused landslides in one of the village's roads, causing many to take shelter underground as it flooded.

Matthew wade to miss odi series against new zealand

Hussain: You can't play in the league like you can the Championship

How many times do you think you've hit your head

on a bridge while running it over?

Wade: So many times I've fallen

and hit my head on a bridge,

the ball bounced around, it was crazy.

Cameron: I was just a child playing against people,

I had no idea, but I couldn't wait to come back.

And even now, when I look back at what I've done, I'm not just thinking about this,

it's just how special and memorable the opportunity was.

You knew exactly where you were going

and had to take control of what you did

So I really thank you again, and I'm sure you'll be

back soon, next time we're in Perth and see you next time.

I still can't understand why they are playing so high up the field.

Who wants to take care of these high up guys, not one of them is bigger than me

But I feel that, in this generation of players, they've forgotten the principles.

If you're better in one way then you're better

That is why I'll always remember that, they're taking away all that.

So I hope when you come up and get on that field, it'll be the way you should be

and you'll have to keep doing things the way you are,

because you can only get better from the first day on.

But we want all the guys who were in Perth to have a good experience in Adelaide.

They've been really good with the new kids so now that they're not so involved here,

they could become better players, even if you look at the stats, they're still not the best.

They'll never be the number one players.

Wade, I'm so proud of you, we can all see that.

I wish you all the best, for next year, we'll be playing on the field

I remember when you were only 18, and you thought that you'd be the next big thing.

I'm very proud you'll be part of one of the greatest teams in history,

you'll leave a legacy for the future generations, and I'm not trying to be picky,

I've seen how young all the younger players are and I know that they're so great,

that you've to be there too for them to have a great career, they need to keep on trying to develop.

They all have t

Aussies fall short in international rules thriller

The game, which took 10 years to complete and saw Australia defeated by an opponent who had been suspended for 18 months, was widely criticised.

Koenig and a friend from his family won a scholarship to play rugby in Samoa but were disqualified from playing for Australia after they were found to have taken steroids.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, in a tweet after the game, thanked all who had played - but said: "It took more than 10 years, but Australia is better off with all the nations in the game today than a few players who have no chance of playing for them."

The game between Australia and Samoa was one of the few international competitions played in rugby union.

Koenig, who was the last person who represented Australia in international competitions, played for Canterbury Warriors.

Tasmania won its first international title, defeating Tonga, in 1994.

In 2000, Tasmania became the first State to make a first-class appearance against England at the World Cup.

Brown chooses surf over super league: "I've played in 10 of the 12 biggest leagues in America, and now I'm here? That's something." The former Kentucky wide receiver admits he's "been working really hard in my offseason."

Landon Donovan: "I can play on the left side." That's pretty lofty of a statement, especially on the eve of New York City FC's first preseason match: How did the Colorado Rapids' newest head coach know there were only two left-sided defenders in the MLS? That the Rapids need to build something around a left-sided defender by January — unless Donovan wants to go into retirement — in order for him to play any meaningful minutes at all in 2018. But what if he's wrong? MLS teams may be more likely to try something like Donovan's approach, but the system is still developing. That leaves the possibility that Donovan can be a good player in MLS. Then there's the fact that Donovan, if he wants to play for the Rapids, is under contract through 2018. Is he going to be free to sign with any other MLS team if the Rapids decide the coach wants him to play as much?

Rafael Aguilar: "I want to go home and study English and try to learn how to be a professional again." You didn't ask Rafael Aguilar what he's studying. What you're likely to hear is that he's looking to become a teacher because he's "just lost his way." He might get that way if the Rapids decide to go that route.

Robbie Keane: "I just want to help the club." And finally, last, but certainly not least, after his initial statement about being open to a move out west, Robbie Keane made a bit of a change, going from being open about his desire to play in Europe with Manchester United to saying: "I'd rather be with Chicago. I'm just enjoying this team right now."

When Will It Happen

MLS is still years off. But that doesn't mean any of this will happen anytime soon. It would be foolish to assume it will. A year from now, the league might have another top-four or maybe even the top two. One of the bigger questions for 2018 is what position each team will have — the top midfield three, for example, or the backup striker, or a veteran DP, who could help right away if someone needs a place to be rested. But while MLS teams are working diligently to find a more experienced player, they have to be careful not to get caught in a bidding war that would make it tougher to sign young, talented talent. And right now, that seems to be the case.

After that year, it'll all boil down to winning championships and putting together

Police seek public help to solve south coast murder

Updated

A man who allegedly murdered two young schoolgirls as a child has been found guilty by a jury of multiple counts of murdering four people in South Australia.

Barry Allan Scott, 29, faces six counts of murdering Samantha Scott, 16, Rachel Taylor, 12, and Hannah Bennett, nine.

The young victims were found dumped near the Townsville golf course in January 2015.

Court heard in November that the murders took place a decade ago.

Scott, who was a school student at the time, allegedly lured two girls to meet him at a nightclub.

The women said they were forced to drink alcohol that had been spiked with heroin before being dragged away and dumped.

The women had been dating Scott's younger brother.

His mother Lisa said that after seeing her eldest daughters, Scott moved into their house because they had been in trouble with the law.

She said Scott is always talking about how he would like to do more for them.

"He says that with what he did for me as a teenager, we can have a nice life. That it's not that bad," she said.

Mr Scott has previously admitted to the charges.

The couple's daughter, aged 15, was on a summer holiday with her family when she found the bodies.

Mr Allan Scott had been living at the same address as his son, and was described as "disorganised" in court.

Police said in an earlier statement they received a call about a man's body.

They said they were investigating a crime scene with information that Scott may have moved to South Australia.

Investigating officer Tony Foulks said in a statement:

"This is obviously a difficult case. As far as I'm aware, there is no new evidence to suggest that there is any connection between the victims and the accused but obviously anything that is new comes into a fresh scrutiny.

"It was clear that when the women were murdered, they knew their attacker and the investigation remains in its early stages."

He said detectives were working with Victorian police "out of their own resources", who assisted him with the investigation.

Police would continue to follow up leads.

The weather quarter-pints, which I will explain more in due course, may be regarded as some kind of public holiday—perhaps even a religious one, and as a means of discouraging superstitious men from visiting such places. So much is true, and I can only reiterate that the whole matter is subject to all the objections already addressed to it by those who oppose all public festivals.

As far as I am concerned, I do not wish to be misunderstood. I only wish to point out that such a belief is one of the most dangerous consequences which might follow from such observance—it can only do harm if the observant do not look beyond it for some other cause. As a matter of fact, I would take any measure which would induce me to forsake such a holiday, for if I knew how to obtain some useful knowledge of this subject, I would not be afraid to take it at the present time. And as for the idea that people with any belief in nature need a reason or pretext for doing so, I would be much more than content to submit to every precautionary precaution which could be taken, while the observant was away from their homes, or otherwise in a distance, from any such place; since such precaution should have been taken by the observant before they began their visit. I must also tell you that I have never known any one to be in any position to argue for the observance of this particular quarter-pint—it is all in the hands of the man who has come to visit them. But as I do not think that such a matter can stand without public discussion, there are other matters to be investigated. One thing, however, must be said about that particular quarter-pint in the village called Gompe; that is—that when it was first founded, it was of so small a size that many of the gentlemen of the village were ignorant of it. We can thus judge of the importance of this particular point, without having to venture too much into the affairs of others.

The general observation that the summer time lasts from April to October, is one of the facts which have given rise to many absurdities; but this circumstance, which may very easily lead people to think that this year is to be considered as the year of the spring equinox, is not to be taken to mean that the spring equinox has never been, or never will be, observed in such a manner. But of what use is it, when, after having ascertained how far our knowledge of the summer extends, we now, following our curiosity, are interested in the same thing, as if we were still interested in the year to come, rather than in the seasons by which it is established? We want to know whether th

Us farm bill crop insurance

It's easy to see why the farmers will find relief in this amendment, which would create a separate crop insurance fund for these farmers. This will help farmers not only protect their crops from other states' agricultural regulations, but also from a whole series of problems that crop insurance poses.

For one thing, the federal government, in both agriculture and insurance, does not have the right to force farmers to meet certain standards. As a result, insurance companies have no right to claim liability for claims that they were not advised about, particularly in the case of crop damage by the weather. Moreover, crop insurance companies don't take the responsibility for claims for agricultural problems into account.

For example, one farmer sued several insurance companies in 2014 to obtain compensation because of crop damage to his fields. The insurance companies responded by setting up a fund for the farmer for farm-related losses. The farmer claimed it was the fault of a second insurance company, which they paid $6.4 million in settlements. The judge concluded this insurance fund was a good idea, because it's in no way similar to insurance policies covering loss of crop. However, when the judge looked at the costs associated with such claims, his conclusion was startling. His analysis found that farmers who could afford the premiums would pay nearly $12,000 in premiums for every $1,000 in crop damage.

This is why farmers should vote for this amendment. We've already seen crop insurance companies try to take advantage of the current crop insurance system, and they've even given farmers an extra incentive to go on crop insurance. This time, the Farmers Insurance Association should send the message that the federal government does not have the right to interfere in the state crop insurance system.

Sheens named kangaroos coach of her first premiership club last week as they prepare to face Collingwood this weekend.

On the road as we're here

The best-ever game for Cats fans came in February 2009 when it beat Sydney.

It might be less than a century since the Cats won that game, but it was pretty awesome to see the club make history and win the cup in the process.

Cats legend John Worsfold was at the game to watch his side go up against an experienced side. The Cats were playing an up-tempo, defensive brand of football and the Hawks looked to play with a quick ball and move it out wide.

However, the Cats had a man advantage and was able to play with the ball at will and use a number of their great key midfielders including John Higgins and Jonathon Freeman in their midfield with a lot of space on the outside to take advantage of.

The Hawks lost by 18 points.

Cats fans were pretty sick in the stands but we didn't get too emotional or teary eyed to show the result either.

Cats coach Brenton Sanderson says he can't recall the last time a rival team came back from a loss so close.

The next week, they beat Carlton by 20 points.

Cats fans are as happy for the Hawks as any with this result and as a reward, they get their best players back in time for the final.

"It's a great win over a big team. They play one of the best football in the competition today and we come home with a little more respect for each other," Sanderson said.

"They are a pretty good and resilient group, so it's good to see them back in our community."

Sanderson said the club would focus on continuing to build on last week's win.

"The bottom line is it was a win for the whole team, regardless of how you felt about the result," Sanderson said.

"Our focus right now is on working hard for the rest of the season, and getting back to top form. This is our year – that's not good enough at all. We have to do everything possible to get better each game, so hopefully we can have one of those win-loss record years next year.

"If we do, it will be a huge achievement in our club's history."

The team also had a strong loss to North Melbourne at The Oval the week before that game.

The Hawks would win that game by 32 points after kicking a goal from 10m out, with a kick from the goal that was from just outside the 30m line.

The Hawks had only playe

Sex workers call for better protection of sex workers as they call for a crackdown on child traffickers

It's true that trafficking of sex workers from South Asia to Thailand can be difficult to identify, and that many traffickers hire sex workers as a way to pay for food and shelter. Still, the number of sex workers trafficked to Australia is relatively small, compared with those trafficked from other countries such as India.

Australia is a country with a long and rich history of sex trade in both the formal and informal sectors. These people, particularly from rural areas and rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa, use sex work to access employment within the industry. They seek to earn money on the backs of sex workers.

Sex workers and the families they bring into sex work have faced exploitation, violence and exploitation as they flee abuse, violence, sex work and family violence and forced marriage, particularly in South Asia. A young child is particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. A child in prostitution who knows their abuser will often tell another child it is okay to bring her back into the sex trade and to keep her "down for the fun" at home. Sex trafficking is one of the greatest human rights issues of our time, and today sex work is at least a third more common than it was just six years ago.

This report provides a snapshot of the history and development of sex work in the contemporary sex industry and the impact that trafficking in sex work has on sex workers and families living in this country.

A few points in the report about sex industry workers are notable.

For many sex workers, the use of condoms and the use of condoms as one component of protection is very different from the use of condoms as a substitute for sex work, for reasons beyond the sex worker's control. If a child or a vulnerable adult is used as part of a sex worker's work, it can leave a permanent imprint on his or her life and will significantly diminish her ability to continue working.

The vast majority of sex workers do not have access to safe working conditions, medical attention, or adequate nutrition to maintain sexual health during their work and even to support their families through these and other health issues.

Sex industry victims have been subject to violence of all types.

Many human rights workers, including some law enforcement, human trafficking experts and others, agree that the most successful organizations and those who lead them are those that can help prevent the most serious forms of violence. However, these organizations do not always use their full mandate to the full extent of its potential and it is the vast majority of human trafficking perpetrators and victims who do not receive the very best conditions, health care, or legal assistance to protect their basic human rights.

The current government of Australia seems to be prioritizing law enforcement

Fishers condemn 'hypocrisy' on marine park boundaries

Lambert says a lack of transparency among local politicians had hindered discussions and she wanted more information.

"I would like the council to understand that we are just like any other business, people come and go," she said.

"There is nothing like a marine park. People make money and some go and get rich. We are just making money from the marine park."

The project, the largest of its kind in the country, will extend the boundaries of an already heavily utilised marine park into six open spaces, which will help protect fish habitat while improving the wildlife habitat.

The project also has the potential to transform Victoria's estuary into a vast recreational and cultural resource, says the project's chief executive, Gary Farrar.

"If we don't have one of those new habitats open up and we have an open estuary... there is an opportunity," he said.

But the development is the latest in a long list of failed attempts to expand the Victorian Marine Park Authority's jurisdiction.

In 2014, the WA Government's Department of Environment and Heritage cancelled planning permission for the project, saying environmental impacts were too complex and it could take many years to implement.

Algeria berbers sign peace deal with Algeria in Geneva

The EU said in a statement: "The EU-African Association for Regional Cooperation (AARC) will now play the leading role in the region, providing support for a new regional political settlement and support to the efforts of the African Union."

"The EU-Africa Group's Africa Programme will focus on Africa's development, strengthening ties and working in cooperation with the African Union.

"The Commission plans to establish in Africa a new regional African Investment Bank which will provide African investors and entrepreneurs with the financial and institutional framework to raise investments and to build commercial capacity.

"EU investment in Africa will continue to be vital, including the investment in Africa's biggest infrastructure projects, especially through the creation of a European African Investment Bank."

'The EU is always open to dialogue'

Speaking at a news conference in Washington, President Trump accused Europe of not acting on threats from North Korea in the wake of US President Donald Trump's criticism of it, describing the international community's response as "meant" and "for what it's worth".

Trump spoke out after Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke with him on the phone last week, in a phone call that was called during the summit after Mr Trump questioned the safety of Japanese citizens who have travelled to North Korea in recent months.

"I had a very strong call with Prime Minister Abe. Just as I do with the president of Germany, we had a very good discussion on issues of mutual interest," Trump said.

"I called him to congratulate him on the successful visit to Asia with Chancellor Merkel. The United States stands with Japan. They are friends of our great nation. I wish them the very best."

Properties quarantined after crazy ant outbreak

By Marietje Schaar

A team of Australian scientists has sequenced the genetic code for an ant with a new antisera on the planet Mars.

Scientists first discovered the Antelope Ant, named for the ant from the Greek word for the ant. The newly sequenced ant is believed to have come from Mars.

"The fact that it is now there is a major surprise to me because it means that the climate there is much more adapted to this species than it is elsewhere on Earth," said study author Peter Hall from the Australian National University.

"It also means that Mars has developed the ability to be very hospitable to the type of life that we have found here."

The new ant includes a unique feature: It has a unique protein signature, called a protein-coding RNA gene. Because the ant does not express these genes and instead has its own protein-coding RNA gene (PCR), the researchers believe it can be used to build a new ant resistant to the antisera in this new region.

"These RNA genes are very important because they enable organisms like us to make more of this ant protein to make it more resistant, and even more effective," said team member Dr. Thomas Kuller from Sydney's Murdoch University.

Scientists from the United Nations' Institute for Science and Technology in Geneva reported a gene called p21-1 that codes for an "isolation-independent gene" that can make an RNA and not a protein.

They hope to find an ant resistant to these RNA genes in other regions of Mars and even eventually the entire planet, Hall said.

"We have only shown we have RNA genes on Mars, not that they are present everywhere and they aren't all involved," he said. "We found at the other end of Mars there are thousands and thousands of RNA genes but they are all hidden and not much is known about them."

Hall said the Antelope Ant RNA-gene was isolated from a plant plant that can't produce RNA, which could allow scientists to search for other RNA genes there, too. But the researchers aren't yet able to create a fully functional RNA-gene.

The researchers are now continuing research and hope to find RNA genes, a protein signature, and more new DNA sequences to make more detailed maps and analysis.

The latest version of the study can be found here and here.

Sink hole residents promised compensation, according to city officials, who said they had been notified last week of their $80,000 tab. At this time, the city is unsure if the water in the sink hole will be restored.

The city has estimated the cost of the repair to be $300,000.

The hole is located at the intersection of Sturgis and Brier Creek roads, near the intersection of the Brier Creek and Sturgis Creek, according to the city.

City officials and sink hole residents said the community was shocked when they learned they might not have received the money they were owed.

"That's probably what's happened to us," said resident Steve Smith. "We're in the middle of something and the community is probably the first ones who will find out if we're the first ones or if there's going to be further payments."

City Manager David Schilling said Thursday the city is asking homeowners with hole issues to contact his office to make sure their money was properly spent. Incoming public safety officer Dave Miller said the city continues to work with sink hole residents, and will provide additional information on the water situation once the water treatment plant is rebuilt.

Councilman Richard J. Del Valle, who is president of the City Council's Environment and Planning Committee, said Wednesday that he was the lead sponsor of a bill in the Senate to allow for a formal investigation into whether residents will receive the promised $80,000.

Del Valle said he and his colleague, Senate President Pro Tem George V. Skelos III, will work with Councilman Mark C. Crenshaw, whose district encompasses the sink hole.

Mayor Kenney said he spoke to Mayor John F. Fox and Crenshaw, who said they would ensure the sink hole is adequately treated before making any payments. Skelos said Thursday that the city will ensure the water treatment plant is not in a state that will stop the water from running off.

Residents who have a problem with the water supply have until January 10 to call 311 to report any leak or other issues.

The city will also issue a letter to any home where the water has leaked, and notify them if a new leak occurs. Sink hole residents are asked to return the leak to the city.

Dalton said residents have until January 5 to give their water back to the city. He urged residents who have not returned their water to the city, or any source other than the utility company, to do so so.

Residents in the sink hole said they expected more than the $80,000 in total that they were promised, and said they still haven't heard about what else they can expect.

Man charged over drug haul after car crash is a member of the Australian Army and his wife was on military leave, NSW police officer Peter Kelly told Fairfax Media last week.

Police officers on Tuesday released pictures and video showing a man they believe was the driver of a silver Mitsubishi Lancer SUV that crashed into an orange Mazda driven by 29-year-old Daniel O'Neill last week.

But the driver, a member of the Australian army, and his wife were in Sydney on military leave on July 30, and were arrested on July 31.

One officer told the court a man had told police that the two men had been talking about drugs at an apartment in nearby Glenelg.

Officers believed they were planning a drug deal when they noticed a grey Mitsubishi carrying six bags.

In the photos of the vehicle released, the driver is identified as 37-year-old Michael Ryan O'Neill who is described as being medium build and 5 feet 9 inches tall, police said.

O'Neill's wife is identified as 34-year-old Kate, from New Zealand.

The officer said it had been found that the pair were planning to travel via Australia to Europe after meeting on July 26 in Perth.

Officers said O'Neill had a "high level of concern about the use of the car".

Kate, wearing her civilian clothes, was handcuffed and escorted away from the scene, while the military officer's wife was arrested for making a false representation.
